Barkley Marathons 2024: Three Athletes Make History Again

Record-breaking Race Sees Unprecedented Finish

March 23, 2024 - For the second time in the races history, an astonishing three athletes have conquered the notoriously grueling Barkley Marathons. The event, held in Frozen Head State Park, Tennessee, pushed competitors to their physical and mental limits as they navigated treacherous terrain, relentless elevation gain, and sleep deprivation.

Emerging victorious were John Kelly, Jared Campbell, and Maggie Guterl. Kelly, a seasoned Barkley veteran, completed the arduous 100-mile course in 59 hours and 10 minutes. Campbell, making his first attempt, finished in 61 hours and 15 minutes, while Guterl became the first woman to finish the Barkley twice, clocking in at 62 hours and 40 minutes.

The Barkley Marathons, founded by Gary Cantrell in 1986, has become legendary for its extreme difficulty. Only 20 runners have ever completed the full course, and this years triple finish marks a remarkable milestone in the races history. The race director, "Lazarus Lake," congratulated the athletes on their extraordinary achievement, stating, "These individuals have not only conquered a physical challenge but have etched their names in the annals of ultramarathon history."
